Hi All,
Newbie problem so please be patient, I am trying to install MODx and cannot get it to work. I have read through similar posts and tried everything I can find but still no joy.
I have tried to install on both MAC and PC. The MAC is a macbook running OS X 10.5.8 and I’m using the latest version of MAMP.
Windows Vista using the latest version of WAMP. Both local testing servers seem to be working fine.
In both I have created databases with full permissions (at least I am pretty sure I have, as mentioned I am a newbie!!!)
When I try to install I get past the language screen, then onto the Database Information screen. Here if I leave the Database login name and password blank the connection to host passes and collations are available, when create or test database clicked I get the message - failed - could not create database.
So I tried to create the database with full permissions on both MAC and PC, which seem to work fine but when their information is put in I just get the message - failed!
If anyone can offer any help it would be greatly appreciated. I am trying to install MODx Evolution. Have tried wiping everything and starting from scratch and the same issues persist. have tried swapping the connection method etc.
Please remember I am new to this, I do have a good working knowledge of CSS and HTML/XHTML.
Thanks in advance for any reply’s!!!!!

I can speak for the MAMP installation, but not the XAMPP. The default MAMP user is root - root. You can connect to the MySQL engine with no username or password, but you’ll have no permissions to do anything with it as far a creating databases or dealing with any databases. This default root user can create databases, so on my local iBook I never have to create a database first.
If you open the mysql database (using the PHPMyAdmin provided by the MAMP start page) and view the "user" table, you’ll see two users; one the root user with a password, and full permissions. The other is no username or password, and also no permissions.
The "db" table shows permissions for specific databases; by default it comes with permissions for a database named test; no username or password allows full access permissions to the test database; this overrules the settings in the main user table only for the specified database.
MySQL permissions can be quite alarming (almost as bad as Revo permissions); I used to do it manually from the command line before there were nice GUI clients like phpMyAdmin! But if you just use the default root - root user for local development, you’ll be fine.
I run XAMPP on Vista. You should be able to create a new user for the DB with full rights and a username/password in PhpMyAdmin. Then use those credentials and database name in the install. The server should be localhost.
Got it installed on the mac (yey) but still not on the pc (grr) But at least I can now get started with the real fun stuff. Thanks for your replies guys... Am sure I’ll be back with more newbie problems!!!!
Cheers again.
