Problem:
To make different subsites (domains - site1.tld and site2.tld) with different templates, but all or maybe part of contents will be same.
Question: Is it possible? Some working solutions...?

changing the settings [(default_template)] depending on the $_SERVER[’HTTP_HOST’] detected

It’s definitely possible, but caching will not be optimal this way. We are working on some more advanced caching strategies in conjunction with some Revolution-based client projects that have similar requirements and this will become part of the multi-site feature set.
