swfObject and Friendly URLs

Hello -

I’m using the swfObject snippet and also have friendly URLs turned on (use friendly aliases = "yes") and the .htaccess file configured properly. Friendly URLs are working great except when showing pages using the swfObject snippet. I can only seem to use the swfObject snippet on pages with their non-friendly url - (http://localhost/mysite/index.php?id=19).

I have toggled the "use friendly alias path" on and off within the manager. I have also changed the way I am calling the swf file - either using the /assets/flash/file.swf or the assets/flash/file.swf - both ways do not work.

Any help here? Anyone able to use swfObject on pages with friendly URLs?

Yep, that works. Is the Flash movie not showing up at all, or do you have problems with subsequent loadMovie() commands?

If you have a base tag, use this format: <base href=""></base> not the short form <base href="" />. Sometimes it seems like this is causing problems.

Also, post a link, if it’s online. And test with more than one browser (although swfobject works in every browser worth mentioning...)

Does that validate?

On a (Dutch) site about HTML, it says

The BASE element only has attributes, no content. Therefore a closing tag is not allowed

Also on w3schools.com you don’t see closing tags in the examples either.

No, but who cares when lack of it sometimes crashes IE (still in the upper sixties visitors percentage on our sites).

I recently saw a site that that had the closing tag in a IF IE conditional. I guess that would work. It is an IE thing, as most internet issues, and they do not seem to care about what W3 says

Since your site is located under /mysite folder, the absolute URL should be /mysite/assets/flash/file.swf

The easiest way to rectify this issue is by using <base>, as suggested by others. If you have <base href="http://localhost/mysite/">, then your URL would be assets/flash/file.swf.
