I’ve seen a few discussions as to the best CMS, etc. A lot of those debates come down to Drupal, Joomla, Wordpress, insert your favorite here. I’m a huge fan of Modx to this point and I seem to learn something new with this system every week. However, I’m at a point where I’m curious about certain aspects of Modx that I have yet to tap into.

I’m really interested in developing a site that is more of a community website. Not really a social network per say, but something that allows members to modify, edit or delete there portion of the site. My question would be is this something Modx is capable of, or am I better suited for another solution. I know that Modx is termed a CMS as is Drupal, although I hear that Drupal may be capable of such things. I’m also wondering if I really just need more of a framework like Codeignitor?

I wish I had an example of something that I could reference, but I can’t think of anything at the moment. It’s really just a vague project idea.

One differentiator is the quantity of Drupal modules available surpasses MODX. If you want to actually be able to control your site markup with next to no effort then MODX is a better choice. It sounds like it’d be effort in either platform. On the MODX side you shouldn’t need anything like Code Igniter thanks to our xPDO foundation. If you’ve never developed a site on Drupal, I suspect you’ll be happier sticking with your "huge fan" status with MODX would make for a more pleasant experience.

There is a useful post by einsteinsboi on this very subject:

That said einsteinsboi is very experienced in Drupal and I agree with rthrash in that there is no reason not to develop your community website in MODx; unless you need social network login features.
