Google Custom Search not working in MODx

I read with great excitement an older thread about a fix for this, http://modxcms.com/forums/index.php/topic,14520.0.html, however came to a dead end. Has anyone managed to get the Google CSE to work without customising core modx code?
Please, i’ve just paid a $100 for google custom search and it don’t work, how stupid am i?

Do you get error messages? What exactly doesn’t work? Do you use friendly URLs?

The simplest hack is to change the Google search parameter from lowercase q to uppercase Q.
