Quick note : Remember the FileDownload plugin has to be used with the FileDownload snippet, but it’s probably mentionned in the FileDownload plugin, not sure... thought I’d remind.

MODx is nothing like XOOPS, you are correct. And, by the same token, you won’t find traditional YAPS (Yet Another Portal System) modules in MODx, because we didn’t want them to be like XOOPS, or any other YAPS. Because MODx works differently, so do most of the add-ons. It’s a paradigm shift, and preparing your site will likely require more technical skills than an XOOPS deployment, but the tradeoff is freedom and flexibility, which MODx users have come to love and expect.
MODx allows you to more easily mash-up various types of web content into a custom presentation that is simply not possible in most CMS’s. That said, you’ll have to decide if the additional freedom and flexibility is worth the extra work you’ll have to put into preparing your MODx site.
You could do this sort of thing with modx, if it will be easy or not will depend on your skill and patience level. I don’t think that there is an out of the box solution but you could achieve this by using a few snippets together (there is one that displays docs from a-to-z and others that could handle the downloads and display).
If you want a lot of flexibility and don’t mind getting your hands dirty with some code MODx could work for you. However if you are hoping for a plug-n-play style solution than MODx may not be the best choice at the moment.
