Bridging Capabilities?

I’m a long time Mambo/Joomla developer new to MODx. Thus far I love what I see!

Many production websites I work with revolve around an already existing application (vBulletin and what not) which already include user authentication. As such I find myself writing bridges which connect a CMS to the application.

I was wondering if someone could point me in the direction of the documentation regarding MODx’s web-user authentication system. I am looking for a new CMS that would allow me to easily bridge to existing applications and would love to be able to use MODx.

First, welcome aboard.

Second, I believe the only real example of a bridge which exists currently is the SMF Bridge, though if you go to http://modxcms.com/resource-listing.html&tags=forum you can see some other kinds of forum integration contributions; that should give you a good idea of how to approach your integration. However, I will warn you that how you bridge with other applications will of course completely depend on how the other application exposes access to their user data, and how you want to handle the integration (i.e. user/password synchronization, external authentication plugin using the login events, etc.).

Finally, just as an FYI, we are in the process of doing a lot of work in the core to make such integration much easier that it is currently.

I think it would be amazing to have the ability to change out the default ’web-user’ system of MODx. This would be an ability MODx would have over all the other CMS’s out there. I more/less have written a basic CMS that does this very thing - but to have this feature on a platform like MODx would be to die for. If this is the general direction you guys are looking to take I would love to get involved!

Naturally, I think it’d be best to keep the admin user system separate. Perhaps this could be done via plug-ins? Depending upon the direction this is going I’d love to help out! I have custom written bridges for vBulletin 3, 3.5, 3.6 and phpbb 2 that I would be more than happy to integrate/contribute.
