Potential Wordpress Migration Tool

I am currently working on an article for the wiki on how to build an entire WordPress style blog in just a few sane steps. As I was working on it, it struck me that being able to import from WordPress into the MODx DB wouldn’t be that hard and would be a really great step in mainstreaming (to devs not to the YAPS users) MODx.

I found this script for migrating WordPRess to Drupal and looked at the code. Seems like someone with a little more PHP proficiency could base a fairly good new module or snippet to migrate a WP post related materials into MODx. I am sure I could get it to work eventually but I am a mere novice at real php programming. Upon reviewing the well commented migrate.php file I am sure that this could be the basis of a really great module or snippet. It seems to make sense since there is so much documentation and so many external apps that can access the post data via the api that it should be a relatively easy go.

Is this something people would want? Could this make a difference to the MODx user base?

That’s a great idea smashingred and likely bears merit in exploring. I do know that the xpdo based future releases will be able to have APIs that allow you to access or import content from other systems in a similar manner, and that we’ve got working proof of concepts for several popular software projects already completed.

Migration tools are always something that will make someone at least try the system out.

As I said, I am trying to see if this is a wanted thing. If there is enough demand I may start poking at it and see if I can’t get some people here on board to complete the dev.

Yeah, I’m sure there would be demand for it.. at least there is a ticket for it in Flyspray and some talk on forums.. You can also look at these for a start.

I looked at it and it is not clear if this just migrates the data from the WP db or if it is a complete integration. I am really looking at developing a tool that would allow Wordpress converts to MODx to migrate their blogs into modx via a module or snippet. I don’t think it would be all that tricky provided that you are on the same server.

Maybe the Japanese integrator does this but the broken English makes it hard to tell exactly if that is what it is for or if it is just to allow the use of both off the same db and to have access to the templating functions of MODx?

I envision a module where users could just enter the admin login and password into MODx or a conf file and run the migrate and the main portions of the wp blog could be placed into the MODx db and if need be additional Db fields and corresponding users, TVs and pages be created.

There obviously can’t be a one size fits all way to do this as there are so many ways in which people can use WP. I think basic setups there needs to be something very simple.

My goal is to help MODx get those WP users over who want to control their whole site in a more easy fashion. WP is not a CMS but so many people use it as such and I know that MODx has more capability for fulfilling the needs of devs who are still deploying WP as a blogging solution.

I will look at the WPIntegration thingy to see if it the code looks like it will migrate the db.

Anyone who wants to help develop such a tool is more than welcome as I am not a hardcore PHP guy and just muddle my way through.
