is there a way using the MODx API to pass variables and messages between chunks and/or snippets for further parsing and processing?

You can use the placeholders: http://wiki.modxcms.com/index.php/API:setPlaceholder, http://wiki.modxcms.com/index.php/API:getPlaceholder
