FFMPEG.exe able to create FLVs but can I do it via a ModX online??

Hi there,

Has anyone figured out, or tried, to have a modX snippet accept uploads (with restrictions in place) of avi and .movs (preferably Mpeg4) and then re-encode them on the server using FFMPEG into flash movies .flv files? I’m not quite wanting to have a YouTube like site but I’d love to automate the process using ModX where ever possible and make sure it’s secure all at the same time.

I’m thinking about using ffmpeg to just generate thumbnails of the first frame from FLV files for a plugin to give the same effect as the new TV image preview plugin. Going to see if I can tear apart that plugin to do what I want..

Converting videos server-side is not as trivial as processing images. You have to deal with much bigger files, and you’ll need a lot more server power...

There are PHP wrappers out there for FFMPEG. They seem like a good starting point to develop a MODx version, e.g.

Thanks for the reply, I’ve looked at this and judging by the examples it will do what I was hoping. However, as you correctly pointed out, this is quite an involved process so I’m waiting for a clear block of time to spend killing a server with it here in the studio.

Since I won’t have control of the environment in terms of hosting, and I imagine most hosting companies would freak out if you started doing server-side video conversion- I’ll be asking my client to only upload flv files for online use. I just want to use FFMPEG for thumbnail creation of frame 1.
