Hi, I am running into a problem where my site is crashing due to too many idle connections. I am not sure how to check into this?

I need to rephrase. My site was crashing due to too many idle connections (or so I was told by my hosting company). At the time it was around 70 connections or so.
I am able to monitor the processes via phpMyAdmin and I am getting anywhere between 0 and 6 connections that have a "Sleep" command. Usually around 5-7 consistently Is this typical for a larger site? This is the biggest MODx site I have developed to date, just kind of paranoid I guess as I have not run into this before with MODx on any of my previous sites.
