Hi All,
We want to use a new CMS for our clients.
Right now we have few hundreds of websites with a common install, but one account per website that we can share with the client.
When we log in the CMS we only access the related site. We are managing clients with DirectAdmin, but could change that part since we will work on a new server.
We are thinking about using a new CSM, and modx Revolution seems to fit our needs since it gives flexibility for programming and templating.
However, I am not sure about the multi domain thing.
The other posts I found with a similar question didn’t get any answer or were showing solutions for 2 or 3 websites, and they seemed to be set on the same account.
We cannot/don’t want to have a tree with 500 websites, also, there will be several people working on modx at the same time (on different clients).
It would be really great if someone could tell me if what we need is doable or not with modx, or point me to a similar solution.
We do not want to do one install per client since this will be impossible to maintain.
Any experience will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
You can manage several domains (websites) whith only one MODx instance by using so called contexts. Have a look at the docs:

I’m only running five so far off the same install using contexts. Benefits - one install of MODx, one install of packages, share common admin and functional bespoke code with all sites.
The super-admin (me) is the only role that needs to see all the sites in a tree - other roles can be limited to as many contexts as you like - so it’s not all that different from how you’d have to organise your filesystem anyway. Also, there are at least two front-end editors being worked on (or have been used, but not yet released to the community), so your clients need never see the backend. I haven’t got that far yet.
What I can’t tell is you is how it scales, although the number of contexts is not the issue, as the resources are held in one table, so ultimately it’s the number of resources and processes (plugins/tvs etc) that will affect performance. I’ve seen in other threads that the MODx team are running sites with tens of thousands of documents (although at scale, some resource types may be better replaced by custom tables).
If you don’t develop / adapt front-end editing another minor issue may be that managers and editors may need to log in to a single manager on a specific domain (I don’t know this for sure).

Thank you odeclas,
That was the kind of feedback I was hoping for : )
I will give it a try.
One more question if you don’t mind, are you using a control panel?
We are currently using DirectAdmin and it would be a big plus if it worked together.
Thank you again,
