Strange characters after update -UTF-8 BOM?

Hi!
Today I updated a site from 0.9.6 to 1.0.2. Now there are 3 strange characters showing on every page just where the AjaxSearch snippet comes in: 
If I try an AjaxSearch, the same characters come up on each loop before search results. The version is 1.8.4.
I found something similar at http://www.w3.org/International/questions/qa-utf8-bom
If I understood that page, the error might come from a specific editor someone used when saving the files. Notepad? Saved as ANSI instead of UTF-8 or something?

Any quick answer/fix before I dig in?

Hi. I had an equal problem. So just open all your AjaxSearch template files with an editor such as KomodoEdit or PSpad (both free) and remove the BOM in the file settings dialog.
