1.0.2 Update to 1.0.3 - Where do I read the install docs?

I’ve downloaded the version 1.0.3 release and am anxious to install it. As soon as I do, the old static website comes down and the new MODx based website takes over.

I’ve backed-up the 1.0.2 and have the files on my machine. But as I look through the archives, I don’t see any readme or docs anywhere.

All I want to know is how to upgrade and I am extremely wary of overwriting files. Where is the play-by-play on what to do? I mean, in some CMSes you upload an archive and push a button, "Upgrade". In others you upload the install directory and the installer puts everything where it should be.

I don’t want to overwrite any crucial files. The .htaccess file would be one of them as it is configured to the hilt to accommodate both a static site as well as the mod rewrite for SE friendly URLs. I understand that that file won’t be overwritten, but it is still an example.

So where is it that I read "How to upgrade: Backup 1.0.2, unzip 1.0.3 and upload all files to your server except (which ever ones I shouldn’t upload for an upgrade). Then visit the install directory.

Is that right? Which, if any files would I maybe not want to overwrite for an upgrade?

OK, don’t shoot me, but I keep wanting to see "upgrade" or "update" somewhere, and I just don’t see it.

Gathering from all the activity, or lack thereof, I am merely being paranoid because obviously no one else is having any trouble or even concerns over "how do I upgrade?"

However, I would just like to point out that maybe that should be addressed, the concerns of the paranoid designer.

Remember, I have not had any bad experiences with MODx. But I have been hacked on phpWebSite, phpBB, Invision Board, WordPress, etc, etc... (I can’t remember all of them, though I am still trying to forget them all).

It would simply be nice for those of us who are worried because of what other idiots have done to us.

Just sayin’.

Just in case you may not have figured it out yet. You can extract the new MODx right over top of your old folders rewriting files that need to be rewritten. Then you have to point your browser to yoursite.com/install to see the nice update / upgrade button I have done a few updates today actually and have had no issues. This being said I like the idea of just creating a whole new site and then moving over your template, tv’s chunks and snippets but that just takes to long.

Beware if you do that via the most common tools on OS X. You’ll lose anything you’ve customized in your environment.

I wanted to upgrade an 0.9.6.1p2 install to 1.0.3 (my first MODx upgrade ever).

I read this page: http://svn.modxcms.com/docs/display/Evo1/Upgrading and chose the 1st method described there.
After I backed up everything, I uploaded the 1.0.3 ZIP to the server, unzipped it, renamed the old assets + manager folders, and moved the new ones to /htdocs. So far, so good. Replaced the index.php file as well.

Then I went to domain.com/install/ - and here I’m stumped, cause the only radio button I am able to select is the "new install" button. The other two (easy and advanced upgrade) are disabled. Why is that? I get no error message, but I can only choose a new install, nothing else. What’s up with that? Anyone else having the same problems?

It can only do an "upgrade" if it finds a config.inc.php file in the manager/includes directory. So copy your old config.inc.php file over, and you’ll be able to upgrade.

Cool. Yeah, I was paranoid about getting hacked. Copied all the new files over the old, re-uploaded the whole site, when done I had to check the settings and save them. Walla.

I just can’t get hacked again.

Yup. But it also said "1.0.2 Update to 1.0.3".

Now after having been so paranoid I am happy for a great outcome. The search utility was a bit off, had to give it some extra padding, apparently they ripped-out some inline styling.

Now, I just have to get the rich text editor working as the default (like it was) and for some reason my search function is reporting results under the search utility, so I have to fix that. But that’s pretty good for not having any instructions.
