How do you kill magic_quotes specifically?

I am running MAMP with a new install of Evo 1.0.4 and I am keep getting strange backslashes every time I save a template or a chunk etc.

Some reading says this new misery is magic_quotes. I tried a couple of things but its not working.

What do you do (specifically please) to kill this issue?

So around line 380 in /Applications/MAMP/conf/php5.3/php.ini

I did add that line to the htaccess file but this sounds like a much more "magic bullet" solution...
