    Hey ModX,

I’ve been looking at online documentation regarding lots of different topics such as users, groups, WebLoginPE and so forth, and I’m having trouble with what I thought would be very simple.

The site I’m currently building requires for my client to be able to update a small range of fields - a few rich text boxes and one image (that I have enabled as a link via a chunk).

I can’t seem to find a really basic tutorial for how to create one user and allow them to access only a few select template variables.

I’m using Revo, and this is almost the last step before I deliver the functional site to the client...

Can someone show me how I would set this up? To repeat, I need only one user with permission to edit approx 3/5 rich text areas, and one chunk comprising an image TV and a link TV.

Here’s a link to my site in progress:

    Thanks,

    wassailant

      Hello

have a look at http://bobsguides.com/revolution-permissions.html especially the "Controlling What Users Can Do and See in the Manager" part. and http://rtfm.modx.com/display/revolution20/FC-Resource...

That can help you to find a (your) way to achieve your goal....

      Cheers

Anso - the original poster mentions WebLoginPE, which is Evolution only.

In Evo I believe you’d be looking for the ManagerManager extra, which helps you customise the manager experience for different levels / types of user (basically you progressively hide fields and tabs from specific roles / users).

          Hey ModX,

So I have made some progress, and now back to scratching my head in confusion.

I’ve successfully created a user and adding this to the existing administrator group, and am able to log in with that user. I’ve enabled the following permissions in access policies:

          edit_tv
          element_tree
          frames
          home
          view_tv

This allows me to look at the element tree and a few basic tidbits, but also allows more access to the back end than I want to supply the client.

When I go to create a new group (in order to limit what resources will be able to be accssed by the user) I get to the point where I can log in as the limitedaccessuser but nothing is displaying where the element tree should be. I created a group and added two of my main resources to what this group is allowed to access - should there be more made available here?

All I want to do is give access to only three/four template variables - a couple of rich text areas and an image - and it’s killing me! I’ve spent ~4 hours just looking at user info, with limited progress at best, and my brain is sore...

It sounds like you might be confusing the element_tree and the resource_tree permissions.

The Resource tree shows the documents. The Element tree shows snippets, chunks, TVs, templates, and plugins.

When messing with policies, it usually works better to give the user all permissions to start, then remove them one by one, testing as you go, rather than the other way around. Be sure to leave all the ones that pertain to resources plus load, list, and view. Without the generic load, and list permissions, the tree will be empty.

It also sounds like your main goal is to customize the Create/Edit Resource panel, in which case you want to use Form Customization rules. Be sure you have the latest version (2.0.5-pl), because both ACL lists and Form Customization have changed in that version and it’s much easier to configure them. Also, be sure to create a Form Customization set for resource/create and another for resource/update.

I would delete any resource groups to start with. Get the Manager actions and the Create/Edit Resource form working right -- then limit the user’s access to resources as a last step.

            Hope this helps.
