I switched over from Drupal and I’m just starting to learn ModX so bare with me.

What I’d like to do is create a content type which (much like twitter) out puts the content of the form onto the same page I guess via AJAX.

So is there any add ons that can help me get on my way or am I on my own with this?

I’d also like to add that having these resources appear on the file tree would not be desirable,

Thanks in advance for anyone who can provide some input.

Anyone? Basically all I need to know is how should I approach this to get the ball rolling. Obviously I shouldn’t use any of the currently provided resource types for this... But beyond that I’m kinda lost on how to get started with modx.

I’m sorry but I don’t think that helps. First things first is creating a content type. As stated before using the current resource types seems like a no-no... So that leaves me to create my own content type (form+DB). However is there any flexible extras for this type of thing or should I start from scratch? Also if I do start from scratch will any other extras work with my app or will I have to recreate them as well... IE:tags and comments.

I like Modx but it is a bit hard to grasp in terms of setting up a proper work flow. Also no offense but the forums are lacking... Just being honest coming from Drupal forums.

You could look into Quip which is used for handling blog comments. I haven’t used it before but there should be a way to get it working with AJAX.

If that doesn’t offer the functionality you require I think you’ll have to look into creating a custom schema and database table to handle your content, have a look at this tutorial here:
            http://rtfm.modx.com/display/revolution20/Using+Custom+Database+Tables+in+your+3rd+Party+Components

On your ’twitter style’ page you’ll need a custom snippet to loop through and display all the relevant existing entries from your custom table. This can be very simple but you’ll need to familiarise yourself with xPDO (see tutorial above).

You’ll need another snippet to handle your AJAX request to save the new post to your table, and return the new content to be appended to the existing page content. You could look into Formit to handle the form data.

You’ll need a bit of patience if diving straight into some custom coding, however there is plenty of help here on the forums if you need it.

ps. Just noticed your last comment... In what ways did you feel the forums are lacking? Your first post might have slipped through but if you stick around you’ll find this is one of the most helpful communities out there.

Do you have an example of what you want to do?

This might give us a better idea of what you want to achieve.

You want to do this via the front end or backend?

If on the backend you can do it with form customization, front end probably with formIt2DB or formIt2Resource.

Without a proper example I can’t give you any more specific suggestions, sorry.

It’s pretty early so the forums might be a bit more quiet than usual.

You might want to ask on twitter use hashtag #MODx good luck.

Sorry lucas for the "forums are lacking" part wasn’t mean to be mean or really had anything to do with my post not being answered. I know it’s open source... People answer because they want to try and help... I guess I’m guess use to trolling the Drupal forums. I do miss the issues queue and also find that there seems to be a lot of "junk" posts in regards to things like CSS and such...

As far as my initial post is concerned I think I was just looking for a simple guideline... I really do believe I’m complicating things by moving too fast as I just started playing around with Modx.

@benmarte here’s a more detailed setup. I have a content type of "newslink". say it have a textfield and textarea. As lucas mentioned I should look into creating a 3rd party component... Which is what I will need to do. So each post would be linked to a user... (submission done on the frontend with a backend manager). But I’d also like to be able to use some already existing extras like say a tagging component... Is Modx API similar to Drupal in which each module can interact via a function? Or would I have to create an entire front end app?

Sorry guys I’m awful at explaining things... It’s 5am.

First... what are you doing coding at 5am Sunday morning? tongue

Given your requirements for tagging, users, back-end management, etc I would seriously look at Quip which will do all that for you, with moderation and email notifications all built in. You might need to modify it slightly to accept an extra field or two, but I think that would be doable and with less of a learning curve than coding up a full custom component. How does that sound?

I’m not sure how scalable it is but as it’s been coded by Shaun (one of the core devs and splittingred on these forums) I would assume it to be very robust.

I think you can also use newspublisher sounds like it does what you want to do maybe with a few edits it will achieve what you want.

                    http://bobsguides.com/newspublisher-tutorial.html

If you want to use tags just install taglister and make it accesible to the template you will be using for the newslister allowing you to use tags in these or any templates you choose.

Look into Template Variables they are very powerful and will help you a lot along the way forward with MODx.
