I have fired my developer and am unfortunately at the "I must do this myself" stage. I have a site at www.fixorfind.com. Previously, I wanted to move to Joomla v1.6 because it has a better permission structure than the v1.5. The lack of a good template for v1.6 has lead me here. I need to migrate to something and noticed this chart http://trends.google.com/websites?q=joomla.org%2C+modxcms.com&geo=all&date=all&sort=1 that looked promising. Unfortunately, my start page after bluehost installed this looks like this http://69.89.31.154/~tedpenne/modx/ and I don’t see any templates from which to choose. Now all the sudden, this does not look so promising.

Can anyone lay out the benefits vs drawbacks of this platform over others?

I’m sure others here can answer this much better than I, but MODx has a much different paradigm than other CMS you may have experience with. It does not use site templates per se (there are templates in MODx, but they’re not like Wordpress templates for example).

MODx works well for people who want to create their own designs using HTML/CSS. It doesn’t come with premade "templates" out of the box, but should work well with any standard HTML/CSS design. This makes MODx significantly more flexible than other CMS. With every other CMS I’ve used, there are things you pretty much can’t do, and things that must be done in a certain way. I have yet to encounter such a case in MODx.
