i’m new to modx, and am mainly interested in its development APIs and features. i need to create some custom views that display sales data in lots of nifty ways to my users. the sales data is stored in mysql tables.
i’ve not invested any time in learning how to develop on modx yet so i could go either way. i’m worried about evolution becoming obsolete soon resulting in wasted time. it might be easier to just start right away with revolution instead.
any general thoughts on this dilemma? it would help.

If your a programmer then Revolution is a decent choice, but it’s still in Beta and a ground up rewrite.
If your not a programmer or don’t want to do much coding Evolution is the better course of action as there is more stuff ready to go. It’s not a dead end path as an upgrade option will be provided.
In general I go for the page count... <5000 pages Evo else Revo.
Hope that helps some.
It sounds like you don’t need a lot of prepackaged add-ons for blogs, forums, e-commerce, etc. In that case Revolution might be a better choice since it is built on xPDO and has vastly improved DB interaction capabilities.

If you’re brand new to modx, I suggest you play with 0.9.6.3 for a while.
Evo (1.0.1) contains managermanager’s (a snippet) bug, while Revo (2.0.x) doesn’t ready for production.

I’d suggest playing with 1.0.2 that should be out tomorrow. 0.9.6.3 contains potential security vulnerabilities that were fixed in 1.0, 1.0.1 and 1.0.2. Unlikely they’d be exploited, but not impossible.
