slow manager UI - session_write_close

hello,

first of all: great great great, i love modx.

about session_write_close:

i just installed modx revo beta3 localy (environment: winXP, apache2, php 5.2.6, pdo, pdo_mysql, mysql 5.0.67, firefox 3.5 /w tracemokey enabled and no firebug enxtension) and the manager is slow. very slow. unuseable slow.

just a guess: it could be the "not closing the session as early as possible via session_write_close" thing, that blocks a request serverside when a specific session is allready open by a previous request.

i know this session blocking behaviour only from my local installments of wamps, not having a clue how to disable that. so i started using session_write_close() in my scripts, whenever i expect multiple requests from one client for one browserpage (yes, ajax)

could this be the reason for the slow manager-interface?

First, do you have any references to information about this session_write_close issue? I’d like to better understand it.

That said, do you have HttpFox or another extension that you could monitor the requests with and see what is taking so long? We have addressed several issues recently in SVN that were causing slow performance issues on some configurations and I’d like to confirm/deny if these are the same issues you are experiencing.

Its personal coding experience and this php-documentation-entry on http://php.net/session_write_close:

Session data is usually stored after your script terminated without the need to call session_write_close(), but as session data is locked to prevent concurrent writes only one script may operate on a session at any time. When using framesets together with sessions you will experience the frames loading one by one due to this locking. You can reduce the time needed to load all the frames by ending the session as soon as all changes to session variables are done.

Simply replace "frame" with "ajax-request" and you’ve the problematic beavior i meant.

the shared server is a faster machine, that makes modx useable. but still, its not as fast as it should be.

again, my theory is that: not closing the session is blocking the last requests.

I see nothing like those response times you are getting on any server I have Revo deployed on, nor on my OS X dev machine. Also, MODx uses a custom session_handler class that only writes to the session table if the session data changes or the cache_db_session_lifetime setting is surpassed since the last write (by default this value is the 1/4 of the php.ini’s session.gc_max_lifetime, or session_gc_max_lifetime setting if you provide one in the configuration), so, I don’t think the problem has anything to do with session blocking, but I’ll review it again anyway. I’m not sure what the problem is, but perhaps it’s something in your Firefox installation slowing everything down; it’s a javascript heavy manager application so any Javascript-related extensions you have enabled may be affecting it.

so, I don’t think the problem has anything to do with session blocking

Maybe youre right, maybe thats not realy the source of my speed-results. i’ll investigate that further with a clean ff profile and an installment on an other machine, posting the results right here.

I wrote a script and ~~looks like~~ i was wrong. The php build-in session handler locks and a costum handler dosnt.

After further research, it seems the default session handler in PHP does lock the session file until a request is finished (lovely), but this is not true with a custom session_handler that uses a database table or memory-based sessions. This is why we chose to use database session handling as the default in 2.0.0. And this is different than frames where there are multiple primary HTTP requests involved. With AJAX requests, the initial HTTP request is finished already because it is returning the content containing the AJAX calls. The only contention here then would be between multiple AJAX requests from that primary HTTP request’s response.

But it does bring up a good point in that any longer running AJAX requests might overwrite the session data written by other concurrent AJAX requests. I’m going to be doing some more detailed testing in this realm and it may be that we need to write the session data as quickly as possible anyway, though that still may not solve the problem in every case if session data is being written by multiple AJAX requests within the same primary HTTP request cycle.

FWIW, this issue should be resolved for the upcoming 2.0.5 release by explicitly calling session_write_close() before all the possible exit points in the core. See https://github.com/modxcms/revolution/commit/18e311258a87cd3609a6e6adaa621af5281fe6f8 for details on the fix.
