    Ok, story goes like this:
I only have Cpanel access (no SSH)
uploaded the standard (8Mb+) zip, unpacked it, moved folders up one level from the modx-2.0.0-beta
learned the hard way that I needed "PDO" and got that sorted out
set the required folders to chmod777 [I assume when doco says writeable they mean really writeable?]
    > not so fond of webroot being 777 by the way
setup mysql db user and database
ran the - pretty nice! - \setup\ stuff and eventually got past those screens
can login to the \manager area Ok (using Chrome is this OK?) [also learned IE6 is useless at \manager!]

But at this point if I go to the public website address all I get is "Page not Found"

Is this normal? Do I keep going? (if so where? and what?)

Is this Beta stable enough to use for a small personal website? I was impressed by what others have achieved and wanted to jump up to something more "modern" in capabilities. I don’t however have much time and virtually no knowledge of javascript (some basic php knowhow)

        Such a worry-wart me huh

        I needed to create a page (resource/document/whatever)
        Got it, rtfm

Thanks. I’ll be back I’m sure.

This is actually because of a bug in the beta-3 traditional package and will only be necessary for setup purposes on the advanced install in beta-4. It doesn’t have to be 777, just depends on your server configuration; just as long as it is writable by the PHP process. Either way, once setup is complete, you can set the permissions back except on the core/cache/, core/packages/, core/import/, and core/export/ directories and their contents; these need to remain writable by the PHP process.

We’ll be writing some detailed documentation on how to better secure your Revolution installations in the near future.
