Here is a list of tutorials which i think would be interesting:
Synchonize MODx with social services.
- How do i retreive my users infos from their Twitter/Facebook/OpenID account?
- How do i populate database with received datas?
- How do i manage and cache the datas?
- How can i do then to let the users connect via those services?
The ideal would be to put an example with one of those services with xml response, since they do use similar procedure.
Bridge MODx with installed 3PC
Same as the posts above, but the php part which allow different services to be synchonized with MODx users, or the opposite.
- How can i use my Forum engine with MODx?
- How do i let users connect with only one account?
I specifically think of SMF here, you could even put a bonus part on the article which show the very simpliest way of showing on the website the last forum post, or the popular topics.
How can i use Wordpress templates in MODx
Wordpress has very beautiful and free templates. They are very easy to integrate with MODx but most of the people don’t know where to begin and how to do it.
- I want this Wordpress template, how can i use it with MODx?
- What about the sidebar and the widgets?
This could be a simple way to show how to work with templates in MODx, convert any available free templates to MODx, let the user know about the tags that they will most likely use for a simple blog, and indicate a list of available snippets who allow them to populate their sidebar (or the content - Ditto).
This article should be in several parts. The actual conversion, use of snippets and templates variable.
You can even provide a list of related link at the end of the article, to let them know about forum or social service integration :p
How can i convert x modules from x CMS to MODx
A simple exemple with a little plugin conversion. I think that Wordpress or Drupal could be good basic exemples, just for reference.
Write tutorials on popular Coding Blog
When interesting Snippets will be available, it will be interesting to post exclusive tutorial on popular Blog such as smashingmagazine or Nettuts.
You will gain more both money and exposure for it.
Example:
- Use firebug and text editing to convert any theme to MODx CMS
- How to make a beautiful image gallery with MODx and JQuery
- Get your favorite Tweets in MODx sidebar
- Create an awesome menu with MODx and JQuery
- Make an outstanding corporate website with MODx

The list is exhaustive and relatively simple? The point is to get exposure and show how MODx truly separate content from coding.
They cover one topic specifically and let user know about the MODx way.
Note that this kind of tutorial in not destined directly to the documentation (or only for link back since the published has been sold to the publishing blog) unless thay have been rejected on the desired blog, and not limited to the MODx official team.
Working with xPDO
Article who cover very basic xPDO concept, and it’s use with MODx. Development oriented, but a little bit less "developpers" oriented than the actual available documentation.
You should take actual exemples:
- How can i retreive the last 5 posts/comments from de the databse
- How can i retreive the most popular page based on tags (TV) from the database
- How can i create/update new table when my snippets is ready for packaging?
- I’ve seen the term Aggregates in Quip, what is it? What is his purpose?
- How can my tables be related with each others automatically?
- How can i use the basic sql commandlike LIMIT, JOIN, ORDER BY
I know that some of those topics has been covered in the actual docs, but they are not easily understandable for begginners.
The explanations should be as simple as possible, with code exemples and stripped out from the php ninja comments like : "It implements the very simple, but
effective Active Record pattern for data access".
Keep it simple, do go to much into detail, even if it’s the exact right name. Sometimes people don’t need details, they need things to work, and i’m pretty sure that serious php devellopers will go further if needed.
For analogy, when i tried MySQL for the first time, i didn’t go for the tuto’s who started with
MySQL is a relational database management system (RDBMS) which is a little bit frightening, but most likely with the more simple
Learn from the ground up, on how to use MySQL for your websites. Even if you are a complete beginner and know nothing, you will be able to understand this tutorial.
Then, over the years, i’ve gone deeper following my needs at the moment m.
If the user which to know more about the actual xPDO overall concept and terminology, some link provided at the end of the article should be enough -> "Go deeper with xPDO"
