I’ve written a language file checker to aid translators in their work. It works for both Evolution and Revolution and works in two modes - it can be used to give the translator information about missing or orphaned language keys and the keys (including strings) that are not translated, or it can be used to give an overview over all existing languages and their status.

I’m getting to the point where I’m ready to release it, but I would like to check a few things first.

    • Is the root file structure for Revolution more or less finalized? The script tries to find the root path of MODx and relies on the current structure to find its way.
    • Is ISO 639-2 the naming standard for languages in Revolution? I’m using that standard to get the english name for a language.
    • Have you any view on when is a good time to release the script? Should I wait for a beta anouncement or an "official" call for translators of Revolution to start their work?

Yes, it’s pretty much as it will be in beta-1 and onward.

Revo goes by IANA name tags. So yes, basically.

Whenever you want; but be noted that the lexicon files for Revolution probably will change before beta and onward.

If people want to go ahead and start translating Revo lexicons, they can, but they need to be warned that those lexicons are still in a fluid state. Especially the default lexicon topic, which needs to be pared down of obsolete entries.

My question to you is; how are you looking for language keys in Revolution? Lexicons are no longer file-based as in Evolution; everything is stored in the DB and cached. So, if you were just perusing core/lexicon, you’d only be looking at the base lexicon entries, not lexicons installed via 3PCs (3rd Party Components), language packs installed via Package Management, or manually installed strings. Lexicons are quite more complex in Revolution; just want to make sure you’re aware of those changes and are doing your search by DB rather than by file.

I’m doing the search by file and the aim was to aid in the translation of the base lexicon entries. Is this a problem? At least for now, languages and changes in the language keys are distributed via the files and the database then rebuilt. Will this change?

A thought on the naming standard. IANA and ISO 639-2 defines different things, ie countries and languages, and differs in many places. In my case Sweden is SE (IANA) and swedish is SV (ISO). SV (IANA) is El Salvador and SE (ISO) is Northern Sami. Some languages are spoken in more countries than one, like spanish. Considering this - isn’t ISO 639-2 more appropriate?
