    Dear all !

It’s been over a year since PHP4 has been discontinued...
Isn’t it time to drop PHP4 compatibility for the new generation ?

this would radically simplify development and testing

In my limited testing, migrating from modx 0.963 to Revolution is pretty complicated if you use lots of plugins and snippets
you have to set up parallel installations if you don’t want to screw up

I understand that many people will have serious problems performing a double migration (evolution->revolution, PHP4->PHP5)
It may become be a terrible hurdle for some...

but shouldn’t a roadmap be established as to when the PHP5 cut-over will be established ?

That has kind of been the plan from day 1, we’re just a bit behind schedule, and we’ll likely be focusing directly on PHP 5.2+ or possibly even 5.3+ with the next generation. Regardless, the sooner we get MODx 2.0 out the door, the sooner we can turn our attention to those tasks. Most of the changes will be small, and most concentrated in xPDO itself. But when I began the project for xPDO, providing the PHP 4 support was essential to not dislocating many in this community, and to some extent still is; just because PHP 4 is not supported doesn’t mean it’s not still in widespread use.

For now, we have xPDO 1.0 that supports PHP 4 and 5, with some exceptions, but I believe it was the right choice and that xPDO 2.0 and the PHP 5.2/3+ focused MODx releases that will be refactored on top of it will be in a unique position to learn lessons from the early PHP 5 only frameworks already in the wild.
