I am wondering how to go about installing modX outside webroot (public_html).

Then I need to know how to configure a subdomain from that single install. I only want to run modX on the subdomain, but hope to run all domains with modX in the future.

Finally I need to know how to use a specific template for that subdomain. The template is ’paperblog’. I know I’ll have to reformat this theme a bit to suit the syntax changes (as described in Bob’s Guides) but I don’t know WHERE I’m supposed to put the files.

I have been looking for the answers to these questions but so far have not found them.

    TIA

Anyone else have similar issues, or am I just a freak?

Are you talking about 0.9.6 or 2.0? As far I as know, quite a difference...

Are you talking about higher upper in the hierarchy or outside the public folder?

If in a subfolder to root the only changes comes to edit your htaccess file

          # The Friendly URLs part
          RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
          RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
          RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php?q=$1 [L,QSA,NC]

          I.e. folder/index.php?q=$1

This is in reference to modX 2.0 (0.9.7).

Ideally I would make a directory at the same level as public_html on my server, ’modx’ for eg. ’modx’ would contain ’core’ and whatever other directories it can and still function. It seems to be a security matter and it was lauded as one of the qualities of this release. So far though there is nothing specific on HOW this might be implemented.

              gpcat:

Deploying Revolution’s core framework outside of the webroot simply has not been documented yet. In fact, there will be custom installation instructions for various special deployment scenarios when we get to final, and likely some custom distributions that are set-up specifically for these kinds of deployments.

The easiest way to work with it for now is to go ahead and set it up following the current instructions, but simply move the core/ folder to a location outside the webroot, edit setup/includes/config.core.php with the proper MODX_CORE_PATH value, and then run setup (this should work either as an upgrade or a new install).

As for setting up subdomains in a single configuration/database, that is covered in existing posts here; I’ll have to search and get back to you with links if you can’t locate that information...

                Thanks, OG.

I realize that documentation is one of the last steps in the evolution (of a revolution) because so many aspects may still be subject to change. And I hate to seem impatient but dammit if the descriptions didn’t get me really excited about using the product! Unfortunately I am a borderline idiot and really need the hand-holding, walk-me-through approach at times. This is apparently one of them.

Has installing Revolution outside of webroot been documented anywhere yet? I’ve looked around but can’t find it. I’ve done a few small Revo things, but I’m about to start my first substantial Revo app and would like to try this. Are there any pitfalls I should be aware of?
