Shamblett,
Just wanted to say thanks for your help on testing the setup procedures for Revo-alpha. We’ve definitely needed some good testers on this aspect, as it’s one of the top things keeping us from beta at the moment.

Ok OpenGeek, your’e right in that there are things here I haven’t grasped yet, perhaps when I do this will appear more logical. The centralized packages directory is a good idea, along the lines of a shared repo.
I think I’m struggling more with the ’packaging’ side of this. As an example I recently installed wordpress on my F7 system, this installs into /usr/share with a bit of config in /etc. Hence, you now have the full protection you can apply here, all the files are root, also on very locked down systems you can use selinux to lock this down even more.
You can’t do this with MODx revo as it stands as some directories need to be writable, we could use /var/lib or /var/www/html here to get round this if we can seperate the readable only from the writable.
These considerations aside I was hoping that we could package revo, this would open it up to the whole RHEL/Centos/Fedora world as people could just ’yum install’ it. Its not uncommon to find corporate policies that forbid any installations from zip files/tar balls, it must be in RPM format. Maybe I’m being over ambitious here at the moment.
I installed wordpress because I wanted to see a ’blog’ site and I could just install it from the repo’s, I now also get notified automatically of updates etc. I could have used any blog software but this was just easier to do. I realise MODx revo is far more complicated an application than wordpress, I’m not suggesting that packaging should be easy, just possible.

OK, pressing on I’ve got some probs on linux, If I save a resource(document) I get ’Please correct the errors in your form before submitting’ and the document is not saved, templates and chunks seem to be but categories for instance don’t reflect in the elements tree(although the DB is updated) I’ll look at this later the error message is a bit vague here.
On windows however this is all OK, I’ve got 4 pages with a wayfinder nav bar, a template a chunk, some categories, timing marks etc. and all seems OK so far, which brings me to my question.
The ’Please wait. loading’ box that appears on most manager actions, it seems to jump around, it appears in one place, then moves to another, it also changes size and sometimes distorts itself when drawing, also, is the progress bar supposed to be filled in?. If so I’ve never seen it do this. It becomes distracting after a while as it causes the screen to flicker sometimes. Do we need this for every action? Perhaps we could just show it on file uploads or something. In fact this may be a good place to look at manager customisation, should I be able to turn this off/override it somehow as a user?

OK, my excursions into packaging resources for revolution has led me to convert about 10 templates from the MODx resources repository for use in revolution.
These along with their build instructions etc. can be found here
http://bitez.hobby-site.com/index.php?id=88 . I’ve raised a JIRA ticket(ADDON-30) to get these into the modx-components svn repository, until then you can get them from my site. There’s also a conversion of the trivial but extremely useful UltimateParent snippet here
http://bitez.hobby-site.com/index.php?id=89. These build, install and seem to work OK on both my windows and linux dev boxes.
Also, I’ve extracted 3 build scripts to show simple, intermediate and advanced(for me anyway) packaging scripts and annotated them with comment to explain what each bit is doing, hopefully to give others not familiar with this some insight into how to build relatively simple packages for revolution. These can go into the revolution Wiki ultimately if people find them useful. I’m going to look at some more complex stuff now like converting snippets/plugins etc. to the new model.

You might take a look at the build script for SPForm in the add-on SVN. It’s not quite finished, but it contains my feeble attempts to do the same and it’s a fairly complex script. After it runs, the user has (in theory) a working contact form page that sends to the email address given during the install.
Built and installed this Ok, looks OK as well. Funnily, I already had a page called ’Contact Us’ that I was going to put e-form in, I think this confused it a little, I now have two with different id’s and the submit doesn’t do anything, but no matter. I’ll test it again an my linux box with a my ’Contact us’ form deleted.
Yes it’s fairly complex, I think I need to look at the resolvers code to see exactly what’s being done here to understand this bit a little better, does beg a question from the above of what we do if we find a name clash, ie an object with the same name as we are installing that’s not ours as such, this could get complicated, but yes, my understanding of packaging is growing, thanks.

Ok guys, I’ve either got a prob with TV’s or I’m doing something wrong.
I’ve created a TV called Dummy_tv that outputs a string that simply says ’Hello this is Dummy TV’. I’ve created a template called Dummy which is empty but with Dummy_tv assigned to it. Ok, I’ve put Dummy_tv on some of my other pages with other templates assigned to them. The templates in question say that Dummy_tv is not assigned to them ’access no’, this is correct. The documents in question don’t list Dummy_tv on the TV pane, this is correct. Yet, the TV contents are output in the page contents, ie it is being parsed even though it is not assigned to the documents template.

I wanted to have a look around the Revolution but have tried to install with no success, I click the install button to be greeted by a blank page, then if i go to the /manager and attempt to login i get the following error login_cannot_locate_account
any ideas?
