I’m just wondering why MODx Revolution isn’t being written in PHP 5. Is there any particular reason for this?
It is being written to take advantage of many PHP 5 features (like PDO) without excluding our existing community which still includes a surprisingly large number of PHP 4 users, many of which will have more than a little difficulty adapting to the new object-oriented paradigm. It was also started 3 years ago, when PHP 4 was no yet quite so taboo.
xPDO 2.0 will follow xPDO 1.0/MODx Revolution 2.0 and is being targeted at PHP 5.2+ (maybe 5.3+). It will be E_STRICT compliant. Once xPDO 2.0 is released, a future release of MODx will also follow this path, providing optimized experiences for adopters of the latest PHP releases without much change from the add-on developer’s perspective (other than encouraging the use of exception handling and other features specific to various releases of PHP 5).
We could have chosen to go directly to PHP 5 and probably would have if we thought it was going to take this long to get to release, but I am confident it was the right decision and will prevent unnecessary exclusion of potential MODx adopters while we patiently observe and learn from the good and bad experiences the framework developers that have targeted PHP 5 specific features are already dealing with.
