    I have a package with two custom db tables, Invoice and Donation. An Invoice contains one or more Donations, and the invoice_id is the key between the two. Here’s the schema file:

    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <model package="mscd" baseClass="xPDOObject" platform="mysql" defaultEngine="MyISAM">
      <object class="Donation" table="donation" extends="xPDOSimpleObject">
        <field key="invoice_id" dbtype="int" precision="11" phptype="integer" null="false" />
        <field key="category" dbtype="varchar" precision="16" phptype="string" null="false" />
        <field key="category_item_id" dbtype="int" precision="11" phptype="integer" null="false" />
        <field key="donation_amount" dbtype="decimal" precision="10,0" phptype="float" null="false" />

        <index alias="PRIMARY" name="PRIMARY" primary="true" unique="true">
          <column key="id" collation="A" null="false" />
        </index>
        <aggregate alias="Invoice" class="Invoice" local="invoice_id" foreign="invoice_id" cardinality="one" owner="foreign" />
      </object>
      <object class="Invoice" table="invoice" extends="xPDOObject">
        <field key="invoice_id" dbtype="int" precision="11" phptype="integer" null="false" index="pk"  generated="native" />
        <field key="invoice_time" dbtype="timestamp" phptype="timestamp" null="false" default="CURRENT_TIMESTAMP" />
        <field key="donor_email" dbtype="varchar" precision="128" phptype="string" null="false" />
        <field key="donation_total" dbtype="decimal" precision="10,0" phptype="float" null="false" />
        <field key="donation_recieved" dbtype="tinyint" precision="1" phptype="integer" null="false" default="0" />

        <index alias="PRIMARY" name="PRIMARY" primary="true" unique="true">
          <column key="invoice_id" collation="A" null="false" />
        </index>
        <composite alias="Donations" class="Donation" local="invoice_id" foreign="invoice_id" cardinality="many" owner="local" />
      </object>

    When a form is submitted, I am trying to generate a new Invoice and then a new (related) Donation for each donation item that was submitted with the form. The script looks like this:

    $modx->addPackage('mscd',MODX_CORE_PATH.'components/mscd/model/','');

      $Inv = $modx->newObject('Invoice');
      $Inv->set('donor_email', $_POST['email1']);
      $Inv->set('donation_total', $_POST['donations_total_amount']);

      foreach($_POST as $k=>$v) {
        if (strpos($k,'donation_') !== FALSE) {
          // this parses some fields out of the input name
          $flds = explode('_',$k);
          $type = $flds[1];
          $dID  = $flds[2];
          $dNm  = $flds[3];

          $Don = $modx->newObject('Donation');
          $Don->set('category', $dID);
          $Don->set('category_item_id', $dNm);
          $Don->set('donation_amount', $v);
          $Don->save();
          $add = ($Inv->addOne($Don)) ? 'added a Donation to the Invoice' : 'failed to add Donation to Invoice';
          $info .= $add . print_r($modx->errorInfo(),true);
        }
      }
      $Inv->save();

    My Invoice and my individual Donations are being written to the database table, but the relationship is not working. The ’invoice_id’ value for the Donations is being set to zero.

    What am I doing wrong?

      Hmm, I think maybe there’s a problem with my Donations schema. I have a primary key defined for ’id’ but there is no ’id’ field defined. Something must have gotten lost in translation. Maybe this is the problem?

        You will probably need the unique ID for your donations object. I often simply extend xPDOSimpleObject as that already adds the "id" field with auto_increment and what not specified :p But I don’t think that’s the problem.

        I think the problem you’re having is that you’re calling save() on the donation object. By doing that you are creating the object already (in the database), but you haven’t defined the invoice_id yet - which you can’t cause you never saved that. If you just get rid of the $Don->save(); line you should be good to go.

          That sounds logical, but I only added the $Don->save() to the code after it initially wasn’t working. I should have removed it before posting the forum code though.

          When I don’t explicitly save the $Don object, it isn’t getting added to the db table at all.

          I think I might need to drop the Donation table and re-add it (with the ’id’ field0, but I don’t have phpmyadmin access and I’m not sure how to do that with the api. Is there a way?

            Could do direct SQL statement with $modx->query(), but I think there’s also a removeObjectContainer method on the manager (similar to the createObjectContainer you use to build the tables from the schema/models).

              I used removeObjectContainer and rebuilt the tables with the id field in the Donations table. But the core issue still remains; I simply cannot get my Donations objects to be created. Not finding any error info either.

              I suppose I could save the Invoice first, and then get the invoice_id, and then assign the invoice_id explicitly to each Donation I create... but that would be taking the long way around what addOne is supposed to do, right?

                Maybe since you have a cardinality of many you need to use addMany?

                Try adding all objects to an array and passing that to $Inv->addMany($DonObjs)

                  That was exactly it! Thanks Mark, you are a life-saver.

                  This is something that should definitely be added to the documentation I think - the fact that whether to use addOne/addMany depends on the cardinality of the alias. I would have thought that each related object would need to be added individually.

                    Added a note here: http://rtfm.modx.com/display/xPDO20/Defining+Relationships

                    But perhaps it’s a good idea to add it elsewhere or more clear... if you have an idea, please file it at http://bugs.modx.com/projects/docs/issues so it doesn’t get lost!
