How do you specify the order of a result set using getCollection() or getCollectionGraph()? I know you can specify a ’sortby’ on a query object, but how can you set this on a normal collection?

$c = $modx->newQuery('myObject');
$c->sortby('myfield','ASC');
$objs = $modx->getCollection('myObject',$c);

I have a collection of addresses that I want to sort by city and state. I tried this

$c = $modx->newQuery('Address');
$c->sortby('city','ASC','state','ASC');

$items = $modx->getCollection('Address',$c);

but it only sorted by city.

Is there a way to do this?

Thanks,
Lee

I have also tried

$c = $modx->newQuery('Address');
$c->sortby('city','ASC');
$c->sortby('state','ASC');

$items = $modx->getCollection('Address',$c);

$c = $modx->newQuery('Address');
$c->sortby('city','ASC');
$c->sortby('state','ASC');

$items = $modx->getCollection('Address',$c);

Should work. Have you tried running:

echo $c->toSql();

After the getCollection call to see what the SQL query was?

Found my problem, it was a real d’Oh! moment too.

Here’s what worked -

$c = $modx->newQuery('Address');
$c->sortby('state','ASC');
$c->sortby('city','ASC');

$items = $modx->getCollection('Address',$c);
