I finally saw an instance of the much-acclaimed (by it’s author(s) anyway) Etomite fork, ModX, tonight.
Well, I have to say, and not just because I’m biased, I really cannot see what all the fuss is about. A couple of new features and that’s your lot. Hardly anything revolutionary or worth shouting about, that’s for certain. I’m all for giving credit where it’s due, in fact, I even signed a new account at Etomite earlier today, to do just that, but I don’t see anything commendable in ModX at all. It’s a small fork with a big voice behind it. A tad too much oversell methinks.
On another note, I’ve been looking at sexy new stuff in MC too. Such as AJAX being used for saving documents. It’s all experimental at the moment but what I saw looks promising. I’m still a big fan of Etomite and still use it to power this site, but the difference already between Etomite and MC is incredible. In fact, I think it’s fair to say that it’s more feature-rich than either Alex or I imagined. I wish we could show more of it than we are, but it’s now at a state where we would be leaving ourselves very open to others adding our ideas into their own software.
Sure, they could do it after we release it too but that doesn’t mean we should give our ideas away before we’ve even had chance to showcase them. I haven’t used every other CMS out there but I bet we’re pretty damned close to being one of the most feature-rich available.
All very exciting stuff. I think we’ll actually have to have one of those ’orrible NDA (Non Disclosure Agreements) when we open it for technology preview, Alpha and Beta releases). There’s just too much to steal potentially.
