General MODx question and advice

Hello everyone,

I’m looking for some advice for anyone willing to help.

I’m in the process of building a new site for a discount card, it’s not exactly an ecommerce site, but quite close. The content will be divided into categories with companies that will have up to 4-5 product discount offers (not for purchasing online rather than showcasing the offers for those who have purchased the card). These companies as I said, will be included in distinct categories like Health care, Sports etc. as will their products. An example of the hierarchy:


There should be separate pages for each company in which page the offers are shown. This should be done dynamically since the offers, the companies and the categories will change in regular time intervals. In addition, there will be pictures for the companies and the offers that should also be able to change quite easily plus of course a search function to cover the possibility of the site growing larger.

Do you think this is something I could do (partially or wholly) with MODx? I have basic knowledge of PHP, Javascript, MySQL and a few other programming languages but of course still in the process of learning.

Hi Kernel, so if I understand correctly you want to showcase the products not to sell them.
Of course you can do this with MODx and you can also customize everything as you wish, design, structure etc.

There is also a search snippet (ajaxsearch) which can be customized, however I believe that the component is not yet ready to use in MODx Revolution because it was developed for MODx Evolution, so you might consider to develop it with Evolution.

To learn how to use MODx correctly find out what Snippet, Chunks, Template Variables, Wayfinder and Ditto are. Here are some great tutorials to get you started:

Exactly, is not hard, altough you have to learn the basic stuff, and is not that easy at the beginning but the tutorials should help you a lot. Btw I have recently done a website quite similar to what you want to accomplish but I cannot show you it here becasue the user hasn’t write any content yet. Maybe I could send you the link in pm though.
