I’ve had to build a menu for a site I’ve been working on in Evo. I plan to upgrade to Revo asap for various reasons, but I’m trying to plan ahead to see it I can achieve anything more elegantly now I’ve got more experience.
My current issue is that I needed to build a significant menu snippet just to get Wayfinder to do something it couldn’t otherwise accomplish itself, yet it’s something that seems so fundamental I can’t honestly believe it doesn’t have the ability to do it ’out of the box’. Here’s the plan:
I need a menu that can drill effectively infinitely deep, but there is only enough room in the menu column on the site to display two levels max, three is you count the top parent that could be listed on its own under certain conditions.
The menu is to show only folders/containers, as the main page content will display the individual items therein. There’s the first problem – it’s been a while but I seem to remember you can’t get Wayfinder to simply ignore resources that aren’t containers. I had to implement that in my own wrapper snippet.
Then you select an item and there are a few outcomes depending on what the selected item contains. The menu needs to be able to render the current view of the menu depending on how deep you are, yet it can only show a maximum number of levels above or below the current folder location, which means the parent ID of the menu needs to be controlled by my wrapper snippet.
So if, from any given view, you select a SUB-folder, the menu needs to either move into that subfolder and render it’s children, or it needs to stay the same and just show that the subfolder is currently open, depending on whether that subfolder actually contains more items – but not just items in general, because only items that are containers actually count, so my wrapper needs also yo inspect the selected folder and see if it’s got child folders, then render the menu accordingly.
Well the wrapper works a treat, but I can’t understand why I had to write it in the first place, so I’m really hoping someone will understand what I’ve tried to explain, and then tell me either that Revo’s version of Wayfinder is superior, or that it could already do it easily in Evo and I wasted my time.
