Hello everybody. I have a question about an upcoming development, and I’m looking for some encouragement to counter my growing urge to switch to WordPress; not because I prefer it (hell no!) but because it might just be easier for my purpose.

I’ve made a fairly shiny news site for my town. It has over 500 aricles now, which is quite an accomplishment for us. In fact, it’s growing so fast I’m having to rebuild the site in Revo to avoid the need to content with the 5000 resource limit down the line.

However, having created a fabulous category menu to drive the site, and filled it with a great deal of content, it’s recently occured to me that sometimes an article is relevant to more than one category and there’s just no way to avoid it. To solve this issue I decided to use weblinks, which works well enough except for the fact that if you have an article summary list that quotes the number of comments that have been posted on that article, the weblink version clearly doesn’t report the number of comments from the original document. I planned to write a quick snippet to solve that, but I decided I would ask the community first to see if the upgrade to Revo and the use of Symlinks might allow me to get around the issue without the need to write a snippet for the older system.

Regarding symlinks, and weblinks too I suppose: I wonder if there is a way to see/find/discover the connection between symlinks/weblinks and their ‘parents’. For example, suppose I create an article that is relevant to more than one category. I create appropriate symlinks in the other relevant categories. But if one day that article needs to disappear, is there a tidy way to track the connection between these documents, and therefore clean them all up without having to trawl through the entire site looking for the linked resources?

I ask these questions because while WordPress is FAR less useful/powerful for this kind of enterprise, I can’t help wondering if the benefit of simple categories might eventually outweight the cost of using MODx in this scenario.

Any help or advise is greatly appreciated!

Sorry no one has replied yet. Have you looked at this? I haven’t done it yet myself. I would think you could use tagging for your categories.
