I have finally finished going through all three parts of this tutorial: http://rtfm.modx.com/display/revolution20/Developing+an+Extra+in+MODX+Revolution

My head is spinning. It seems to me that this whole process is quite complicated, requiring a lot of different parts all setup very specifically to get everything to work. I was just wondering if anyone else out there is also struggling with this?

Are there any other resources that might help me wrap my head around how this whole process works?

I just seem to be getting lost going between all the files and trying to figure out all the modx calls on top of it.

That tutorial is aimed at those who want the comprehensive tutorial, that shows how to make the most flexible, powerful Extra involved - one that has its own build script, Custom Manager Page, development environment and can be developed from a Git repository and distributed as a transport package.

You can also simply just make a Snippet or Plugin from within MODX, and package it up with the PackMan extra. That is simpler, but less flexible.

PackMan is probably what you want, unless the package is fairly complex.

There is also a tutorial here related to the MyComponent sample build package: http://bobsguides.com/mycomponent-tutorial.html.

MyComponent can be used to build a more complex package and the files are already in the right places -- you can just replace them with your own or paste your own code into them and run the MyComponent build script. It’s still not a trivial process, however.
