simple text TV printing strange code on frontend

I have a Revo 2.0.8 installation running for a client that is using an old macbook with firefox 3.6. I created a template with 2 rich text variables assigned to the template. The client has called complaining that something was not working correctly. He typed in his text into the rte and in the preview, he did not see the text but this html code:

I have never had this happen in all of the modx projects that I have created. The TV has the following settings:
input type: Rich Text, Output Type:Default. Input Option Values and Default Value are empty.

Maybe this code above rings a bell for someone out there.

I upgraded the installation to 2.1.2 and it seems to have disappeared....
