"Test database server connection and view collations" does nothing

I am trying to install modx 2.0.8 by Advanced Upgrade Install and get to the Connection Information screen with the "Test database server connection and view collations" link. When I enter my database details and press that link nothing happens.

IE gives a javascript error:

I tried following the bug fix described at https://github.com/modxcms/revolution/commit/1d2f4f1b7bc8cbcccb9c4af8de53ddb14fa7ad64
from the bug report: http://bugs.modx.com/issues/4585 but this doesn’t seem to have made any difference.

I downloaded modx from this link: http://modx.com/download/direct/modx-2.0.8-pl.zip I.e. the traditional install.

There are no relevant errors in core/cache/logs/error.log

The only thing that is perhaps unusual that I have done that might be related is that i chmodded everything in the live hosted directory to 775 while trying to get the setup process to run.

My server details are:
linux: 2.6.18-194.17.4.el5
php: 5.3.3
mysql: 5.1.52
apache: 2.2.3
pdo_mysql is installed
eAccelerator is NOT installed

Update: Even after removing everything, restoring a backup of the original site, then starting over (except I didn’t re-download the zip file), I still have the same problem. This time I only chmodded the core/cache directory to g+w.

Might not be the issue but I have had failed installs a couple of times, to resolve it I have had to jump to another browser to do the install as FF cached the failed install and I couldn’t get past it, try that and see if it works.

I’d already tried with Firefox and IE. But just to be sure I have just tried with Chrome too and get the more interesting error in the dev console:

POST processors/connector.php 503 Service Unavailable

I can browse to /setup no problem and everything works until I press the "Test database server connection and view collations" link. So it’s not as though the server is down.

Any more suggestions?

This may or may not help indicate what is going wrong on the Advanced Updgrade Install.

I tried using the normal "Upgrade Existing Install" option instead but got the error:

"Checking if /home/sites/site144/corporate/core/config/config.inc.php exists and is writable: Failed!".

For whatever reason this file didn’t exist. So I copied the file from manager/includes to this directory hoping that this is what is intended.

That left the error:

"# Database connection failed! Check the connection details and try again."

However I am certain the details in manager/includes/config.inc.php are correct since I can log in to the database myself using these details.

...lots of strange things happening. I hope someone can help.

After clearing everything again and re-downloading, now I’m consistently getting this error in logs at core/cache/logs/ :

(ERROR in xPDO::connect @ [...]/core/xpdo/xpdo.class.php : 331) SQLSTATE[42000] [1044] Access denied for user ’’@’localhost’ to database ’modx’

I get this if I try either the normal upgrade or the advanced one. The proper details are in manager/includes/config.inc.php and I was specifiying the right details on the advanced upgrade page.

By the way, I’m trying to upgrade from version 0.9.6.1p2 if that makes any difference.

You cannot upgrade from MODX Evolution (0.9.x/1.0.x) to MODX Revolution (2.x). This is not currently supported.

Damn, I missed that.

I’ve upgraded to 1.0.0 now and that went smoothly. I’ll just try the latest Evolution version now.
