How to alter a "TV-Value" from a Snippet?

Can anybody tell me how to alter a "TV-Value" from a Snippet?

I did this for an existing TV named "counter":
```
$counternew = $modx->resource->getTVValue('counter') + 1;
```
And now I want to save the the $counternew into the TV "counter"
