Broken Site Tree after adding slash to 'alias' field

I just tried adding a slash to my document’s ’alias’ field like ’myfolder/myfile’ and the site tree is all screwed up now. I went back to edit the document and the slash was not there so it obviously sanitized the input so why did my site tree break? The site tree is displaying things as if the forward slash created a container that is breaking the layout.
