Beside this we want to add to the users a score-system in which the user can collect bonus-points for doing certain things on our website like sending comments to our articles which would be honored for example by 1 point.
For this we want to establish a highscore-list containing the users with the most bonus-points. For this we need a tool to show the three users with the most points. Is it best to use an external database for this goal or would you just use a variable in the external fields or an existing field in the user profile?

Using a separate table might be better. It will make for faster queries and you won’t have to worry about users editing their own scores when they update their profiles.
Otoh, it will be more work to set up and will make it a little more difficult to show each user his or her score.

You’d have to write a snippet to get the top user (or the top 3 users). It will be somewhat simpler and significantly faster if you can use an existing field.
