Desperate to complete installation

Hi Guys
I am new to modX and basically arrived here due to total frustration when trying to use other CMS’s.
I decided to give modx a try and excitedly started the download. I ran into problems on the first base (just trying to access the setup file on my browser)and have to say was very disappointed to find so many varied misleading proposed solutions on the forums, google. etc. In the end it all boiled down to setting the permissions. Okay I got passed that but now I hit another brick wall because I am told the pdo_mysql driver is not loaded.(cant connect to the database)
However my remote host server and its mysql works fine for other currently operational databases such as wordpress, etc.
PLEASE can somebody save me from further dissapointment with modx and save me from another 4 hours that I wasted this morning and tell me how do I resolve this issue and proceed to the next base. PLEASE !!!
Remember you were all newbies at one stage. I haven’t written this without trying. I have spent at least 2 hours trying to resolve this on my own.

MODX Revolution requires PDO support in order to work. However, MODX Evolution 1.0.5 which is our classic code base (still actively developed) will work without PDO.

Kindly try MODX Evolution.

Or ask your host to enable PDO.

I second what Bob said. Or find a host that has the necessary PHP modules. WordPress, Drupal 6, etc. are different pieces of software, so they have different requirements. MODx Revo requires PDO -- I think Drupal 7 does too, but PHP is kind of a pain to recompile, so lots of hosts don’t install the newer PHP modules.

I’d recommend Bluehost if you want to try out MODx -- they use SimpleScripts, so you can literally click a button and install any of a number of CMS’s (including MODx) without you having to go through any of the frustrations you’re experiencing. People tend to be reluctant to change hosts for whatever reason, but it doesn’t take that long to change your host and it could save you hours of frustration. HOURS. Check it out on Bluehost for something like $8 bucks a month.

Amen to that. I have had very good luck with Bluehost and I’ve used them for several years. Their SimpleScripts install of MODx took less thatn 30 seconds the last time I used it. It will install either MODx Evolution or MODx Revolution and will also do updates (and alert you when you log into cPanel and an update is available).

I cannot afford to waste "struggle" time (although thats how I’ve learned "ALL" I know so far, by struggling) so I’ve taken your advice and registered with bluehost. I guess its no bad idea working with 2 hosts anyway.
Ok so here goes, lets hope the installation is swift... I have already seen their link on the Simple Scripts, so have every confidence it will be.

I joined Bluhost. Very pleased so far so thanks for the rocommendation. I think their 24/7 support chatline is a priceless service.
The version I installed is 2.0.4-pl2 but they offer a drop down box with what appears to be a whole list of back issues too.
Looking forward to using modx but still having teething problems.

I’m disappointed to hear that they’re still on 2.0.4 (MODx is at 2.0.7). There are a couple of significant changes in the permissions area that make the more recent versions easier to learn. You might want to rattle their cage on this, especially if you will be setting up security restrictions for various users.

Yeah, last I looked they are behind on both Evo and Revo; although it’s not really Bluehost, it’s SimpleScripts that’s behind.
