Cannot upgrade to 2.0.7 because of safe_mode on

Dear all,
I am trying to upgrade my websites to the new 2.0.7, but with one of them I have the following error while the setup tries to update:

Checking to make sure safe_mode is off: Failed!

I do not think to have the permissions to change this PHP setting on the server, so: is there any workaround for this? why it is now needed to have safe_mode to off?

i have a similiar problem. i tried to set safe mode off in vhost, but it dont work... any ideas?
