Error log is always empty - How to fix it?

Does anybody know what could be the reason for having always an empty Error log and how we can fix it?

No errors are being generated?

That´s what we thought at the first moment, too. But it seems very unlikely that there have been no errors in the last weeks. And the log was even empty after adding this line

$modx->log(modX::LOG_LEVEL_ERROR,’Testing: ’ . $resourceId);

in a plug-in as described here:

Therefore we think that the error log is not working correctly in our setting.

Is there a good way to test where in the error log-process could be a mistake?

Check your PHP error log and see if it is intercepting all of the errors. If not, I think the problem might be that your plugin is not executing or getting to the point where the log is being recorded. Also, make sure the PHP process can write to the log file/directory.

Thanks a lot for your reply. I just checked the error.log in the cache/logs/-folder which includes many thousands error-messages until today. So it seems that they are just not shown in the error log in the MODx-Backend.

Do you have any idea what could be the reason for this?

There are too many? It’s likely running out of memory trying to load the file contents...

thanks a lot again. You were right. The file was too big. I deleted its content and now the error log of the backend works again.
