Greetings all, and for the record... I am totally confused after reading > http://modxcms.com/forums/index.php/topic,42797.60.html

OK, I’ll toss this scenario out...as if "part of it can be done"...I think it can be done.. And I’ll try to toss in Layman’s terms the best I can

First off, for my goal...Not at all worried about "back end" user and permissions...(at least i don’t think as no reason for them to be into a file system), but back to trying to foreclose the goal....of my "permissions, context allotments and the rest"... I feel this is the best way to describe.

    OK, (2) usertypes...

userTypeA & userTypeB (This is not an auction), but think of "buyers and then Sellers"...or as what Bob was getting at...as a "representative of each userType" would have access control to their own space... (aka Identity/Profile etc)...and I am thinking...instead of ANY back end into Revo, that I would do what I need...into another DB completely...as there also would be reoprts to also generate.

Now, Mainly using Revo w/Login...(for user tracking etc) and from what I am ?? GUESSING ??, i should be able to parse out and path them with what is in this thing.??

The "World" (web on this) as I am going to call it, (usertype A or B) not logged in, I will have for basic generic information display...an example being...back to "Buyers -vs- Sellers" thinking...is that:

I WANT SOMETHING or I HAVE SOMETHING...so, think of Ebay I guess...for a generic model at the moment..and simply show quantities of "Have’s and Have Nots" (ie... what available from both sides)

If (the World) is not Registered, I feed them a carrot, on a string... Once they "register", permissions I can increase...(so far so good etc) They then get some candy...and this is where the Ulevels come in...

Based on "the level"... i can then control what they see (OF COURSE) But I also would like to then based on a subscription level, be able to control "actions".. (different level of ALERTS & ACCESS to INFO)

Am I making sense so far? I don’t want to get a novel going on this concept, until we’re all on the same page please...as that thread from a year ago...(above link).. but in other words...displaying data, based on uLevel comes into play.

Sure hurt my head...laugh.. and thanks for taking the time to read this...(and hopeful reply)

    Jim

It can definitely be done, but there are a number of ways to do it.

You could put the "available" items into one resource group and the "wanted" items in another and restrict those resource groups to certain user groups in the front end using the permission system. You’d probably use the getResources snippet to display them. You’d most likely use template variables for the categories. I’d probably use TV called category with a comma-separated list for the category and another similar one for the subcategory.

For your teaser, you could show them a random selection of items, but not the full list.

FYI, you can add extra fields to the user profile using extended fields. That’s relatively easy to use once you have it set up, so if you think you need that capability, I’d suggest learning it first before you start messing with the rest of the design.

If you’ll have a lot of items, you’ll be much better off in the long run if you create your own MODx objects to hold them and couple of custom DB tables in the MODx database to hold them rather than using the method above. Personally, that’s how I’d do it and then I’d display them with snippets using a Tpl chunk for formatting. I’d use custom permissions to determine who saw what using $modx->user->hasPermission() in the snippets.

If you’re not familiar with PHP and how MODx uses xPDO to access the database, however, there would be a fairly steep learning curve. No matter how you do it, it’s likely that you’ll need some custom snippets.
