And just to come back to the original post, for anyone who is wrapping their head around xPDO, the alias that you define in your xPDO XML schema is what you use in the API. E.g. XML like this:
<object class="SuperPower" table="superpower" extends="xPDOObject">
<composite alias="Liberations" class="CountrySavagedForItsNaturalResources_Class" local="superpower_id" foreign="superpower_id" cardinality="many" owner="local" />
Would translate to API usage like this:
$superpower = getObject('SuperPower', 123);
$liberations = $superpower->getMany('Liberations'); // <-- the argument here is the *alias*
