snippet call problem with parameter (Modx Revolution 2.0.4-pl2)

I have a problem with a modx fundamental

I am sure it is something I am overlooking so i need some fresh eyes on it...

i have a snippet called testing
```
<?php
echo "testing " . $param;
```
when i call it without a param, it works fine
```
[[!testing]]
```
prints...
```
testing 
```
however, when i add a parameter to the snippet call...
```
[[!testing &param=`hello`]]
```
then nothing is printed (so the snippet is not getting called?)...

clearly i would expect the following output:
```
testing hello
```
help would be appreciated, i know there is an embarrassingly simple answer to this

```
or
```
[[!testing?param=`hello`]]
```
