I can’t log into the member-only area in the front-end using IE7 or IE8. With Firefox, Chrome, Opera front-end login works as it should. I’ve also tested this on different computers so that browser caches should not cause the problem.

Using Internet Explorer I have to log into the back-end before I can see the restricted front-end pages. Which is especially awkward for users like simple members who have no manager rights: they have to fill out the back-end login form. They get an error message in the back-end, but then they can see the the member-only front-end pages. Even the Admin can’t log into the front-end using IE.

I’m using this code for login: [[!Login? &loginResourceId=`28` &logoutResourceId=`39` &tplType=`modChunk` &loginTpl=`CustomLoginChunk`]]. I’ve also tested the simplest version [[!Login]]. No matter what, can’t login using IE, but it works with the other browsers.

I thought that the login problem could be related to a non-default context that I created for a subdomain. But further testing revealed that I also can’t log into the front-end using IE when the restricted pages are part of the default web context.

Could it be some bizarre cache problem that only affects IE? Because when I try to clear the cache the message windows stays empty, only saying "Konsole läuft"/"Console running".

Could it be some PHP setting that only affects IE? If so, which to look for?

I really need to solve this problem, because the restricted pages will have about 500 users, the majority of them being simple members with no editing rights. Most of them will use IE to browse the pages.

    Any help appreciated,
    Andrea

I figured out the source of the problem. It is a cookie issue that the Internet Explorer can’t solve and other browsers don’t have a problem with.

Following sequence of actions produces the issue:
Using IE I navigate to http://domain.de/. A cookie [email protected]/ is set. Then I click on the link to the login page. This is delivered with the www prefix - a cookie [email protected]/ is set. The login results in the "unauthorized page". With other browsers the login is successful under the same circumstances.

When I start navigating the website using www.domain.de I can log into the front-end with IE without problems, because only one cookie is set. This way I can also login the restricted subdomain context.

Now I’ve added the proper RewriteCond entries in the .htaccess file so that a http://domain.de/ addressing and front-end logins are now possible with IE too.
