I’m wondering if MODx can handle 40.000 registered users.
Will it slow down the database or site performance when this user group is queried?
Will connecting to a secondary specific user database be a better option?
modxcms.com runs on tens of thousands of (restricted) users.
That said, the only slowdown you’ll see is on the Access Controls -> User Groups tree, if you open up the node for that user group. That said, you don’t have to open up that node at all - just edit the group itself. The rest of the data is in paged grids, which are scalable.

That’s good news! I will start working on this then.
The plan is to have this accessible on the front-end via "peoples" (found out about that one today).
People need to be able to query this user database on the front-end, can I use simple search for this or should I use something custom made?
Can I query for all the userfields or a standard set?
Thanks!!
