And prepare to get hacked. I’d seriously advise against it. It’s the same as giving Everyone Full Control on Windows.

The minimum you should need is "chmod u+rwX,go-rwx" on the MODx/webroot directory, and "chown <webserver_user>". This gives the owner read/write on files and read/write browse on directories - and nobody else anything.

Personally I have "chmod ug+rwX" and "chown <webserver_user>:<webserver_group" which allows the web server user and it’s primary login group the above permissions. I then add my own user account as a member of the <webserver_group> and I get access. Nobody else has anything.

Thanks guys I thought as I had w&r to /XXXX all was good.
I created a symbolic link to home/public_html/XXXX in /var/www with sudo

          I have now changed /XXXX to 777.

I am not sure what user Web-server uses so not sure what to set perms to as is only on home machine no other users am I at risk.
