Has anyone seen MODx suddenly not work. I upgraded to 2.0.3 a week after it was released and made plenty of edits to a new test site. I left it alone for a couple of weeks and today I noticed the site was getting a 404 /page not found error.

When I try to log into the manager the login page is available, but it won’t recognize allow login, giving an error message:

    $_SESSION Variable not set

Thinking that maybe I forgot the ID somehow (after thousands of login times) I tried the "forgot your login" link. It doesn’t seem to recognize any email address I type in.

So, taking a cursory view at the database it appears that everything is still there (from what I can tell) and all the files in the folder seem to be there.

What should I do to troublshoot the problem? Aaaand boy am I glad this wasn’t live yet.

Host is a shared 1&1 Linux site which hasn’t given any trouble with the other site running on the same account.

I’m guessing that you’re using CAPTCHA. If so, that would indicate a failure of the CAPTCHA plugin probably because your host has changed something regarding sessions.

You can get past that by going in PhpMyAdmin, editing the modx_system_settings table, and changing the value of captcha.enabled from ’1’ to ’0’
After doing that, delete all the files in the core/cache/ folder except index.php and clear your browser cache and cookies.

You may still have trouble, though, and may have to create a custom session.save_path in php.ini or tell your host that you’re having a session problem and ask for their advice.

Your guess is correct. I do have CAPTCHA running on the manager login. I will try those suggestions and see how it goes.

You can disable CAPTCHA manually by deleting your cache files, editing some of the settings in the cache registry, and updating db preferences.... it’s (ahem) something I’ve had to do once or twice...

You can also just edit core/cache/config.cache.php and change the value of captcha.enabled from ’1’ to ’0’. Then clear your browser cache. Once in the Manager - immediately go to System -> System Settings and disable captcha or it will come back.
