I want to enter a bunch of code on a TV and convert it
to entity-encode using a little Perl program so I can
enter the code into a syntax highlighter.

So first I thought of using a Custom TV but now I see
that I can do the same with a Custom input type or even
better with a Custom output type... mmm...

what is the best way to go? and the easiest?
My intuition says that Custom output type is the best
but I really do not know...

Output Filters. There’s already a htmlentities one:

      [[*tv:htmlent]]

And if that doesn’t work, you can just use a snippet as a custom output filter: http://rtfm.modx.com/display/revolution20/Input+and+Output+Filters
